Seven reasons your Xiaohongshu account stopped growing

Most stalled accounts were never penalized. Something plainer went wrong, and each cause has a test you can run yourself in five minutes.

TheRedScroll|16 min read|September 17, 2026

Your Xiaohongshu (小红书) views have been flat for two months. The agency says the algorithm changed. Maybe. A Xiaohongshu account not growing is rarely a penalized one. More often the notes stopped clearing one of a few plain hurdles, and every one of those shows up in the creator dashboard if you know where to look.

Run the table first. Then read the reason that matches. Every source below was checked twice in September 2026.

Symptom you see Most likely cause Five-minute test Reason
Views fell on every note at once Account-level hold Open the boost option on a recent note and read the eligibility line 4
Notes open, nobody saves Reads like an ad Count product-first openings in your last ten notes 1
Impressions high, opens low Cover loses on the grid Data center: impressions against reads, note by note 2
Search share near zero Titles use brand words, not buyer words Search your product category in Chinese and count your notes 3
Every new note flat, old notes still earning Subject changed Top ten notes by saves against last month’s subjects 5
Growth stopped the month seeding ended Nothing replaced paid reach Pugongying order history against the follower chart 6
Views up, saves up, sales flat Product, price or offer Read the last 50 comments and sort them 7

Most of the seven are fixable in weeks. The last one is not a content problem at all, and it is the one an agency is least likely to raise.

1. You are posting ads, and the platform can tell

Xiaohongshu (小红书) keeps publishing how much marketing it removes. The scale tells you how good the detection has become.

Between March and the end of August 2025, Xiaohongshu banned over 12 million fake accounts, actioned 13.76 million false marketing notes and cleared over 360 million fake comments. Source: China Daily (中国日报网), January 2026. https://cn.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202601/20/WS696eef27a310942cc499bf9f.html

Nobody hand-reviews 13 million notes. Detection at that scale is automated, and automated detection learns shapes. Product name in the first line, a benefit list, a price, a “link in bio”. Those are ad shapes. The platform’s rules account (薯管家) named the two behaviors it goes after hardest.

The March 2025 notice targets marketing notes seeded in volume through outside agencies, and organized comment armies that fake reviews or steer users to buy off platform. Serious cases are banned permanently. Source: Sina Finance (新浪财经), March 2025. https://finance.sina.com.cn/tech/2025-03-31/doc-inerpuqn7106647.shtml

Notice who is named there: agencies and comment farms, not brands. The brand is the one whose account eats the consequence, and the platform said how many it meant to go after.

The first round of the 2025 crackdown targeted close to 1 million violating accounts, over 1 million violating marketing notes and over 10 million water-army comments, with a focus on groups farming accounts of more than 1,000 followers. Source: Sina Tech (新浪科技), April 2025. https://finance.sina.com.cn/tech/roll/2025-04-09/doc-inesqrfq6514987.shtml

Since March 2026 the same ladder applies to notes written and posted by an AI tool.

Accounts that occasionally use AI-hosted tools to write or post notes get graded measures, from a warning to limited distribution. Accounts registered, posted and run by AI tools, or whose every public note is AI-posted, are banned. The five-minute test. Open your last ten notes. Count how many open with the product name, how many carry a price, and how many read like a person telling a friend what happened. If the first two numbers beat the third, the account is publishing ads, and the feed treats it that way.

The fix isn’t subtle. The note is about the reader’s problem. The product shows up in the middle, because it solved it.

2. Your covers lose on the grid

On Xiaohongshu (小红书) a note is a tile in a two-column grid before it is anything else. The system reads the picture as well as the words.

Multimodal understanding of note content runs through the whole of Xiaohongshu’s search, recommendation and transaction systems, including content quality evaluation and multimodal retrieval. Source: QbitAI (量子位), April 2022. https://www.qbitai.com/2022/04/34112.html

So does the user, faster. A cover with no Chinese text says nothing to either. A cover that is a product on white says “catalog”. Foreign brands ship both, usually because the images came from a global asset library and nobody was allowed to write on them.

The five-minute test. In the creator data center, sort your notes by impressions and read the impression and read columns side by side. A note the system showed to plenty of people and few opened has a cover problem, not a distribution problem. Two or three of those in a row and the ranking has already learned that your tiles don’t get clicked.

The cover that works is usually the one your brand team would approve last: a real photo, a promise written on it in characters, a number if there is one. Test two covers on the same note idea a week apart. Keep the one that opens.

3. You are invisible in search because your words are wrong

Search is not the side door on Xiaohongshu (小红书).

77% of Xiaohongshu’s daily active users use search to solve a problem, and 75% browse the recommendation feed. Source: Huxiu (虎嗅), May 2026. https://www.huxiu.com/article/4861801.html

And the volume behind that share is not small.

Xiaohongshu passed 400 million monthly active users and 800 million searches a day. Source: Xiaohongshu (小红书) report, reported by Beijing Business Today (北京商报) via Sina Finance, May 2026. https://finance.sina.com.cn/jjxw/2026-05-27/doc-inhziqxq9291575.shtml

A note the feed forgot in a day can earn from search for a year. Only if recall can find it, and recall matches the words your buyer types, not the words your brand book uses. “Sustainable outerwear” is a brand phrase. Hardshell jacket (硬壳冲锋衣) is a query. Tags work the same way: they tell recall which neighborhood the note lives in, and twenty unrelated tags put it nowhere.

The five-minute test. Search your product category in Chinese, the way a buyer would, and scroll two screens. Count your notes. Then search your brand name. If you rank for the brand and not the category, the account is being found only by people who already know you.

Our guide to how the Xiaohongshu algorithm works covers why the feed forgets a note in a day and search does not.

4. Your account is shadow-limited and nobody told you

“Shadow limit” is your word for it. Xiaohongshu (小红书) has a different one: a list of measures, and it publishes them.

For manipulative comparative reviews, the platform handles the content and the account behind it, including canceling commercial cooperation rights, limiting traffic, taking notes down and banning accounts. The brand that benefits is limited as well and loses brand score. Source: Southern Metropolis Daily (南方都市报) via NetEase, June 2025. https://m.163.com/dy/article/K1547S8705129QAF.html

Two things in there matter for a foreign brand. Limiting traffic is an official measure, not a rumor. And the brand carries a score that goes down when a creator working for it breaks a rule, whether or not the brand wrote the note.

What the platform can do How it tends to show up What it usually means
Limit one note Views stop within hours, note still on your profile One note tripped a rule; the account is fine
Limit the account Every new note flat, older notes still steady A pattern across notes or comments
Cancel commercial rights Pugongying (蒲公英) orders stop going through Undeclared paid work, or a creator you paid was caught
Deduct brand score A notice to the brand A creator’s note about you was actioned
Take a note down The note is gone and a notice arrives A claim, image or link broke a rule
Ban the account The account cannot post or is gone Serious or repeated breach

Nothing in that ladder promises you a phone call. What the platform does describe is a graded system with a warning and an appeal step, and it has said so since the 2022 commercial convention that set it up.

The head of Xiaohongshu’s community team said in May 2022 that enforcement would not jump straight to severe punishment: there is an advance reminder and an appeal channel. Since December 2021 the platform had banned 81 brands and handled 172,600 notes and 53,600 accounts. Source: New Rank (新榜) via Tencent News, May 2022. https://news.qq.com/rain/a/20220506A0BBD700

The five-minute test. Open a recent note and tap the boost option (薯条). If the note is ineligible, the screen says so, and a note the platform will not sell you promotion on is a note it has flagged. Then open Help and Customer Service in the app menu and look at the note appeal and account appeal entries.

If every note passes the boost check and the appeal screens are clean, you are not limited. Go back to reasons 1 to 3, because the answer is there.

5. You changed what the account is about, and the system noticed

Four reasons in, and none of them has needed anyone but you to look. The next two are about what changed on your side.

A new agency, a new marketing lead, a new campaign (usually all three at once), and the account that used to post recipes now posts founder interviews. Views drop. The reason is mechanical.

The Xiaohongshu (小红书) home feed runs recall, coarse ranking and fine ranking. Notes published in the last day make up close to half of home feed exposure, and the modules were rebuilt from daily to minute-level updates. Recall pulls your note for users who liked notes like it. Your followers, and the users the system learned to match you with, were assembled around the old subject. Change the subject and the match is wrong for everyone, and the new subject has no history yet. You are a new account with an old follower list.

The five-minute test. Pull your top ten notes of all time by saves. Write down what each one is about in five words. If the last month’s notes would not fit on that list, the account changed its subject, and the drop dates from that week.

The fix is not to switch back. It is to bridge. On accounts we inherit mid-switch we run two notes in the old lane for every one in the new, for about six weeks, so the match moves rather than breaks.

6. Seeding stopped and nothing took its place

A lot of foreign accounts on Xiaohongshu (小红书) grew on paid creator seeding, zhongcao (种草), and never noticed that the account itself was not growing. When the campaign budget ended, so did the growth, because it was never the account’s growth to begin with.

Brands sent 27 million collaboration invitations through Pugongying in 2025, up 34% year on year. Source: Huxiu (虎嗅), May 2026. https://www.huxiu.com/article/4861801.html

Pugongying (蒲公英) is the platform’s own creator marketplace, and the platform has said since 2022 that it wants paid work to go through it.

The 2022 Community Commercial Convention asks brands to seek creator cooperation through Pugongying, opposes fake seeding, and asks that deals stay on the platform rather than moving to profile pages, comments or direct messages. Source: 21st Century Business Herald (21世纪经济报道), May 2022. https://m.21jingji.com/article/20220506/herald/8aab5572c0f69554f5722de1364879d2_zaker.html

The five-minute test. Open the Pugongying order history for the last 90 days and lay it next to the follower chart. If the follower line moves only in the weeks with orders, the account has no organic engine. If there are no orders but creators were paid, somebody routed money around the marketplace, and that is a reason 4 problem waiting to happen.

Seeding should hand the account something to keep, a search position or a comment thread that keeps going after the creator’s fans have moved on. If it did not, the budget bought a month of reach and left nothing behind. Our Xiaohongshu marketing cost guide covers what the marketplace actually charges.

7. The account is fine. The product is not.

Sometimes the notes are read, saved and commented on, and nobody buys or follows.

Then it is not the account.

Those people compare. They read the comments under your note and the comments under the note about the local brand at a third of your price, and they type the question your note did not answer. Does it ship from a bonded warehouse? Why is it more expensive here than on the brand’s own site abroad?

The five-minute test. Read the last 50 comments across your notes and sort them into three piles: praise, questions about the product, questions about buying it. If the second and third piles are bigger than the first, the content did its job. The offer is what people are arguing with. No cover test fixes that. Price, availability, or a claim you cannot make in China does.

Our piece on why your China engagement rate keeps dropping covers the cross-platform side of this: when the number falls and the audience did not leave.

Xiaohongshu account not growing? The 30-minute self-audit

Do it in this order. Each step feeds the next.

Minute Check Pass looks like
0 to 5 Boost eligibility on the last five notes All five eligible
5 to 10 Help and Customer Service: note and account appeal screens Nothing listed
10 to 15 Data center: impressions against reads, last 20 notes Read rate is not falling note by note
15 to 20 Search your category in Chinese, two screens At least one of your notes appears
20 to 25 Top ten notes by saves against the last month’s subjects Same subject
25 to 30 Pugongying (蒲公英) orders against the follower chart Follower line moves in weeks without orders

The creator data center on Xiaohongshu (小红书) adds one more tool most foreign teams have never opened.

Your own account is the only benchmark you can verify. We do not publish market averages for views or follower growth on this platform because no platform source does, and an agency quoting one cannot show you where it came from.

If the audit clears every row and the account still does not grow, the question is strategic, not tactical. That is what our Strategy, Campaigns and Analytics service is for. The RedNote agency page lists what we run for clients on the platform.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my Xiaohongshu account is limited?

Run two checks inside the Xiaohongshu (小红书) app. Open the boost option on a recent note: a note the platform will not promote shows a community-norms line. Then open Help and Customer Service and look at the note appeal and account appeal screens. If both are clean and boost is available, you are not limited. Look at covers, words and subject instead.

Why did my views drop suddenly?

Three causes cover most cases. One note tripped a rule and was limited, which shows up as a single note flat while the others hold. The account changed subject, which shows up as every new note flat while old ones keep earning. Or seeding ended and the organic base was never there. The data center’s impressions and read columns tell the three apart in ten minutes.

Can a limited account recover?

Usually. The platform describes a graded system with a warning and an appeal step, and appeals are typically reviewed within one to three working days. Fix the cause first, because an appeal on a note that still breaks a rule fails. Then post clean notes on the account’s original subject for several weeks. Accounts banned for repeated or serious breaches do not come back.

Get the account read by someone who runs these checks every day

Send us the account name. We will run the audit above on the last 90 days, tell you which of the seven reasons applies, and show you the fix before you change agencies or budgets.
