WeChat Official Account setup for foreign companies in 2026

A foreign company can open one WeChat (微信) service account without a Chinese entity. It costs 99 US dollars per verification and takes 7 to 15 working days. Here is the full process, and what that account can't do.

TheRedScroll|15 min read|October 6, 2026

A WeChat (微信) Official Account for a foreign company is possible, and Tencent runs a route for it. But the overseas account is narrower than the one a Chinese company gets, and most guides skip that part.

The short version: you get one account, it must be a service account, and it does nothing until it’s verified. Planning a Chinese company later? You can still start overseas. Tencent lets the account move to a mainland one, with conditions covered below.

Official Account (公众号, formerly subscription) Service account (服务号), mainland company Service account (服务号), overseas company
Open to overseas companies No No Yes, one account each
Push notifications One a day Four a month Four a month
WeChat Pay Government and media accounts only Can apply once verified Separate cross-border program
Verification fee 300 yuan per application 300 yuan per application 99 US dollars per application
Review time 1 to 3 working days 1 to 3 working days 7 to 15 working days

Every figure here comes from Tencent’s own help pages, checked twice in October 2026.

Which WeChat Official Account a foreign company can open

WeChat (微信) has two kinds of public account. Tencent renamed one of them in late 2024, which confuses most older guides.

WeChat renamed the “subscription account” (订阅号) to “Official Account” (公众号) in November 2024, across the app and the platform. Source: Woshipm (人人都是产品经理), December 2024. https://www.woshipm.com/share/6158064.html

Tencent’s developer docs now use the same split, “Official Account (formerly subscription account) and service account”. The service account (服务号) is the one Tencent describes as giving companies stronger business tools.

For a foreign company, there is no choice to make.

An overseas entity can register one account, and overseas regions support the service account type only. The account can be used only after verification succeeds. Any WeChat user, in China or abroad, can follow it. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/180312zQjeYV180312FNNbmA.html

The biggest practical difference is how often you can reach followers.

An Official Account can switch on the follower push notification once a day. A service account can do it four times per calendar month. Posts published without the push still appear on the account’s profile. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/120911VrYVrA131025QniAfu.html

Four alerts a month is tight. In return, a verified service account gets the deeper tool set.

After verification, a service account gets all advanced developer interfaces and can apply for WeChat Pay, advertiser access, cards and multi-agent customer service. A verified Official Account gets menu links, some interfaces, advertiser access, cards and multi-agent service. The document checklist, by entity type

The overseas route asks for one registration document that depends on what kind of organization you are, plus five items everyone supplies.

Entity type Registration document Tencent asks for
Company Company registration certificate or business license
Sole trader Sole trader registration certificate
Government body Founding documents, laws, or a stamped official letter
Other organization Founding and operating documents
School Founding documents and education license

Every applicant then adds the same five items.

Overseas verification also requires a color scan of the contact person’s ID, both sides; an application letter and an operation authorization letter, in simplified Chinese, traditional Chinese or English; the contact’s phone bill, or a stamped office phone bill or bank statement; and a trademark certificate or authorization if the account is named after a trademark. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/190723Mjey67190723ey6Fbi.html

Two of those trip people up. The phone bill has to belong to the contact person named on the form, which sounds trivial until the contact is a regional marketing lead whose phone is billed to head office (in that case, Tencent accepts a stamped office bill or a bank statement instead). And if your account name is a brand, the trademark paperwork has to match it.

Step by step: registering the account

Registration is a short online form. Verification is where the weeks go.

  1. Open the platform. Go to the WeChat (微信) Official Accounts Platform at mp.weixin.qq.com and click 立即注册 (register now) in the top right.
  2. Pick your region and type. Choose the country where your company is registered. If your region isn’t listed, Tencent doesn’t take overseas sign-ups from it yet. Choose service account; it’s the only type offered.
  3. Fill in the account details. Enter the account information and confirm the registration region.
  4. Complete the information registration. Tencent calls this 信息登记 (information registration), and it records the legal entity behind the account.
  5. Apply for verification. Agree to the verification service agreement and upload the documents above.
  6. Accept the naming rules. If the name breaks them, a reviewer contacts you to change it.
  7. Fill in invoice details, then pay. You pay again for every new application, so get the documents right the first time.
  8. Wait. Review runs 7 to 15 working days. The clock starts once you’ve paid and your documents are complete.

Steps 5 to 7 follow the order on Tencent’s own help page for verification, which ends with payment by scanning a WeChat code.

Who registers matters as much as how. Tencent’s agreement ties the account to the entity that passes review.

Tencent owns every Official Account. The right to use it belongs to the entity that passed the qualification review, and gifting, lending, renting, transferring or selling that right is prohibited. Source: Tencent (腾讯), WeChat Official Account Platform service agreement, clause 6.1, confirmed October 2026. https://mp.weixin.qq.com/cgi-bin/readtemplate?lang=zh_CN&t=home%2Fagreement_tmpl&token=&type=info

Register under your own company. If an agency verifies the account with its own license, the right to use it is the agency’s. And the agreement bans handing it over, so there’s no clean way to get it back. That’s why our WeChat agency page registers client accounts under the client’s company name.

Verification: fee, timeline and what gets rejected

Verification is the step you pay for, and the one that can fail.

Overseas entities pay 99 US dollars per verification application. The fee does not depend on the result. Review is completed within 7 to 15 working days after complete documents are submitted. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/190723aQvMR31907233IF7FV.html

A mainland company pays less, and its review is quicker.

Mainland verification costs 300 yuan per application, not refunded on failure, and verified status lasts one year. Review takes 1 to 3 working days, and verification must be done within 30 calendar days of registering. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/161219JvMNvi161219raieiY.html and https://kf.qq.com/faq/120911VrYVrA1312123qyyqI.html

WeChat (微信) verification is really two reviews: one of the company, one of the name.

WeChat verification checks the account’s entity and its name separately. Passing the entity review opens most tools. Passing the name review completes verification and adds the badge. Advertiser access and quick Mini Program registration need both. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/170213JfiEv21702132AN7F3.html

What gets rejected? Tencent publishes no rejection list for overseas accounts. It does name two traps. The entity on the verification form has to match the entity the account was registered to, or the review can fail. And a name that breaks the naming rules gets sent back for a change.

The entity entered for verification must match the account’s current entity information, or the account may not pass review. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/1612197nEJNR161219BB7Jne.html

The documents list points to the rest: a phone bill that doesn’t belong to the named contact, and a brand name without the trademark paper behind it.

Then plan for next year. Verification is not a one-time fee.

If the annual review lapses or fails, the account loses its verification badge, and a service account loses payment, authorization and other advanced interfaces. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/120911VrYVrA140716FBraQJ.html

What an overseas account cannot do

That covers getting the account open. The next sections are about living with it.

Some of these limits are written into Tencent’s rules. Payment is a separate program altogether.

Limit What it means for you
One account per entity No second account for another brand or market
Service account only Four push alerts a month, never daily
Region-locked sign-up Only regions Tencent has opened can register
Region-locked migration You can move to a mainland account, not to another country
Payment is separate WeChat Pay (微信支付) for overseas firms runs through a cross-border program

A verified service account can apply for WeChat Pay. An overseas company, though, collects through Tencent’s cross-border track.

WeChat Pay’s cross-border program contracts directly with merchants only in Hong Kong, the UK and Singapore. Elsewhere it works through licensed institutions. Applicants need an overseas legal entity, and funds are settled once turnover reaches 800 US dollars. Source: WeChat Pay (微信支付), cross-border merchant FAQ, confirmed October 2026. https://act.weixin.qq.com/static/merchant_overseas/faq_en.html

So treat the overseas account as a publishing and service channel first. Selling through it takes more setup.

Moving from an overseas account to a mainland one later

Many brands start overseas and set up a Chinese company later (our China Market Entry service covers that step). The account can follow, with conditions.

An overseas account can migrate to a mainland China account, or to an account in the same overseas region. Mainland to overseas is not supported. An Official Account (formerly subscription account) cannot migrate to a service account. If all followers move, the target account may have no more than 1,000 followers. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), account migration guide, confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/170221uQ7Vz2170221ZzIZv6.html

Migration has its own fee and paperwork.

Migration between different entities costs a 300 yuan review fee, not refunded. The application letter must be notarized. Review takes 1 to 3 working days, and followers get one day to unfollow before the move. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), account migration guide, confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/170221uQ7Vz2170221ZzIZv6.html

What moves, and what stays behind:

Migration carries over original-content protection, the comment feature and the violation record, plus, if you choose, all followers, article materials and the WeChat ID. The old account is then reclaimed, and the new one keeps its own entity. Source: Tencent customer service (腾讯客服), account migration guide, confirmed October 2026. https://kf.qq.com/faq/170221uQ7Vz2170221ZzIZv6.html

One practical point. Open the mainland account early, before it builds an audience of its own. The 1,000-follower cap applies to the target account when all your followers move across.

Setting up the menu, auto-reply and welcome flow

Once verified, the account needs three things before the first post goes out.

The menu sits at the bottom of the chat window. Keep it to the links people actually need: your products and a way to reach you, plus a store or booking page if you have one. Tencent’s personalized menus let different follower groups see different buttons, so a store customer and a distributor don’t have to share one menu.

The welcome message deserves the most thought. It fires when someone follows. Keyword auto-replies answer the questions people type most, such as store hours or where to buy. Both run inside a tight message window.

A service account may send 3 customer service messages within 1 minute after a user follows, and 5 messages within 48 hours after a user sends a message. Source: WeChat Open Docs (微信开放文档), customer service messages, confirmed October 2026. https://developers.weixin.qq.com/doc/service/guide/product/kf/intro.html

Design around the 48-hour window. End the welcome message with a question. Each message a follower sends opens a fresh window for your replies. Our WeChat agency page includes menus, auto-replies and brand assets in setup.

Connecting WeCom for one-to-one follow-up

The service account broadcasts to everyone at once. WeCom (企业微信) is where your team talks to customers one to one, inside their normal WeChat (微信). Our guide What is WeCom covers the basics.

Like the service account, WeCom has an overseas route, and it is narrower too. A WeCom set up from outside mainland China, with a foreign phone number, can be verified as an overseas company.

An overseas-company WeCom verifies with its full name, short name and a company registration certificate or business license, and review usually takes 1 to 3 working days. Some functions are not supported, including external payment collection, conversation archiving and the third-party app marketplace. Source: WeCom help center (企业微信), overseas company verification, June 2026. https://open.work.weixin.qq.com/help2/pc/16535

That page lists no fee. Once you have a Chinese company, WeCom verification is priced, and it has to be renewed.

For a mainland company, WeCom verification costs a 300 yuan review fee per application, not refunded. Companies with 1,001 to 10,000 members add a 2,700 yuan scale fee, and those above 10,000 add 29,700 yuan. The annual review costs the same as the first. If verification lapses, the company can hold only 100 external contacts, and no new customers can be added. Source: WeCom help center (企业微信), confirmed October 2026. https://open.work.weixin.qq.com/help2/pc/18372

A mainland WeCom can also run CRM apps from the marketplace. Those apps pay Tencent for interface licenses.

Since May 16, 2022, third-party WeCom apps need interface licenses: 5 yuan per account per year for a basic license and 50 yuan for an interconnect license, at 1 to 5 accounts. New authorizations get 90 days free. Source: WeCom open platform (企业微信), pricing notice, May 2022. https://open.work.weixin.qq.com/wwopen/common/readDocument/38829

Linking the two takes one button. Put a WeCom contact button in the service account menu. Followers who tap it can add one of your staff as a contact. Those contacts stay with the company if that person leaves. That’s the job of our CRM and private domain traffic service.

Total cost and timeline

The whole setup, from Tencent’s fees to the first post:

Item Cost Time
Registration Free One online form
Overseas verification 99 US dollars per application, renewed by annual review 7 to 15 working days
Mainland verification (if you have a Chinese company) 300 yuan per application, one-year term 1 to 3 working days
Migration to a mainland account later 300 yuan, plus notarization 1 to 3 working days of review
WeCom verification Overseas route: no fee listed. Mainland: 300 yuan a year, more above 1,000 members 1 to 3 working days (overseas route)
Content and running the account On our pricing page, if you hire us Ongoing

Every fee above was on Tencent’s pages on October 1, 2026, and Tencent changes them without notice. The fees are small. The calendar is what slips, and a complete document set on day one is the fastest way through. Our WeChat agency page puts our own process at four weeks from signed contract to first post, including setup and verification.

FAQ

Can a foreign company register a WeChat Official Account?

Yes. A company registered outside mainland China can open one WeChat (微信) service account by choosing its registration region on mp.weixin.qq.com. It doesn’t need a Chinese entity. The account works only after verification, which costs 99 US dollars per application and takes 7 to 15 working days. The daily-push Official Account type is not offered to overseas companies.

What is the difference between a subscription and a service account?

Tencent renamed the subscription account “Official Account” in November 2024. It can send one push alert a day. A service account sends four a month, but once verified it gets all advanced interfaces and can apply for WeChat Pay. Overseas companies can only open a service account, so they plan around four alerts a month.

How much is WeChat Official Account verification?

For an overseas company, 99 US dollars per application, charged whether verification passes or fails. For a mainland company, 300 yuan per application, not refunded on failure. Verified status lasts one year, and an annual review keeps it. Let it lapse and a service account loses its badge and its advanced interfaces, including payment.
